Electronic Stability Control

TRW’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system combines the capabilities of anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control with a new lateral stability control feature. While ABS and Traction Control improve the lateral stability of the vehicle by limiting wheel slip, their primary function is to enhance vehicle control during deceleration and acceleration.

The ESC system is specifically designed to help control and maintain the lateral stability of the vehicle. ESC assists drivers during difficult driving conditions by monitoring steering wheel angle, yaw rate and lateral acceleration using a variety of sensors to determine how well a vehicle is responding to the drivers steering input. If a potential loss of vehicle control is sensed, ESC automatically applies brake pressure to the appropriate wheel(s) and if necessary, cuts engine throttle to help bring the vehicle back in line with the driver's intended path.
